Excellent walk around Montmartre. Francesca was the perfect host. Funny, energetic and knowledgeable. This is the third time I've take the free walking tour in Montmartre and, although previous guides have been good, this was the best. Highly recommended.

More information

Rising above Paris, Montmartre is one of the city’s most atmospheric neighborhoods. Known for its steep streets, artistic legacy and village-like feel, it offers a different pace from the grand boulevards below.

Background and history

Montmartre sits on a hill about 426 feet (130 meters) high, once separated from Paris and long associated with artists, writers and free thinkers. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, figures such as Picasso, Van Gogh and Toulouse-Lautrec lived and worked here, shaping its bohemian identity. The neighborhood is crowned by the Sacré-Cœur Basilica, one of Paris’s most recognizable landmarks.

Why visit

Visitors come to wander cobbled streets, explore small squares like Place du Tertre and enjoy panoramic views over Paris. Montmartre combines historic cafés, local art and viewpoints that reward the climb. It is ideal for travelers who want atmosphere, history and iconic city views in one area.

How to experience it with Civitatis

With Civitatis, you can explore Montmartre on guided walking tours that reveal its artistic past and hidden corners. These tours help you move beyond the main viewpoints and understand how the neighborhood evolved from a rural village into a cultural symbol.

Did you know...

Before becoming part of Paris in 1860, Montmartre was an independent commune with its own vineyards, which still produce small quantities of wine today.
